Sverker Norrby PhD

Sverker Norrby was born on the same day as Sir Harold Ridley, but 39 years later. He graduated from Uppsala University 1975 with a PhD in Physical Chemistry and joined the Swedish National Testing Institute as Senior Research Engineer in the Department of Polymer Technology of which he became head in 1977 when the National Testing Institute moved from Stockholm to Borås in the west of Sweden.

He married Marja Jonas in 1978 and had Johanna in 1981.

In 1984 he joined Pharmacia as project leader for introduction of new manufacturing technologies of IOLs at the newly acquired Medical Workshop, Groningen, Netherlands. That company had been founded several years earlier to exploit the ideas of Jan Worst MD, a pioneer in IOL surgery and development.

In 1986 he ascended to Technical Director and in 1999 as Chief Scientist until retirement in 2010.

Sverker was elected Convener of the international standardization (ISO) of Intraocular Implants in 1995, a position he held until 2018.

Sverker became a member of ESCRS in 1995, ASCRS in 1996, and ARVO in 1997. He attended almost yearly, giving presentations (60). He has authored or co-authored about 40 papers.

In 2020 he and Marja moved to Eindhoven, Netherlands, to be close to Johanna’s family with grandchildren Erik (2013) and Emma (2018).
