Jean-Philippe Colliac MD PhD
Dr. Colliac graduated in Medicine at the University of Paris, France, in 1986. He completed his residency and his fellowship at the Centre Hospitalier National d’Ophtalmologie des Quinze-Vingts in Paris. He was qualified as a Specialist in Ophthalmology in 1988. In 1997, he defended a thesis of Doctorate in Optics (equivalent to PhD) at the University Paul Sabatier of Toulouse, France.
He performed the first PRK at the CHNO des 15-20 of Paris in 1991. The field of his research was the study of the optics of the eye in using matrix calculation. He is the author of the Colliac formula for IOL power calculation and he created algorithms used in excimer lasers for PRK and LASIK surgery.
In 1999 he was appointed by Prof. Paul Lichter (past-President of the AAO) as Adjunct Research Investigator in the Department of Ophthalmology and Visual Sciences of the Kellogg Eye Center at the University of Michigan. He worked at the University of Michigan on the Femtosecond laser project with Prof. Gérard Mourou, Director of the Center for Ultrafast Optical Science (CUOS) (and the 2018 Nobel Prize in Physics), to develop the use of the femtosecond laser for eye surgery. Dr Colliac was the first to introduce femtosecond laser eye surgery in Europe.
In 1992, he began private practice in Paris where he mainly performed general ophthalmology, cataract and refractive surgery. From 2000-2004, he has been on the team of Dr. Emanuel Rosen (co-founder and past President of ESCRS), to perform refractive surgery in the UK.
