Douglas D Koch, MD

Dr. Koch is professor of Ophthalmology and the Allen, Mosbacher, and Law Chair in Ophthalmology at The Cullen Eye Institute, Baylor College of Medicine. Doug grew up in Port Huron, Michigan, where his local ophthalmologist and family friend was Nicolas Douvas, one of the early inventors of automated vitrectors.
Doug attended Amherst College and Harvard Medical School. He completed residency training at Baylor College of Medicine and was an itinerant fellow who spent 3 months at Moorfields Eye Hospital and then studied with Drs. David McIntyre, Clifford Terry, and James Rowsey. Doug joined the faculty of the Cullen Eye Institute of Baylor College of Medicine in 1982..and never left!
His clinical and research interests are in cataract and refractive surgery. He has taught over 250 residents and fellows, authored over 200 articles and book chapters, and given 32 named lectures, including the Jackson Memorial Lecture (AAO) and the Kelman Innovators Lecture (ASCRS). He is editor emeritus of the Journal of Cataract and Refractive Surgery (JCRS) and past president of the American Ophthalmological Society, ASCRS, and the International Intraocular Implant Club (IIIC).
He is the primary originator of the Baylor Nomogram, which is the first toric IOL calculator to incorporate posterior corneal astigmatism. He collaborated with Li Wang, MD, PhD, in her formulation of the Wang-Koch adjustment, which was the first formula designed to address the problem of hyperopic outcomes in long eyes. Together with Jack Holladay MD and Li Wang, he co-authored papers on the optimal methods of statistical analysis of the accuracy of IOL calculation formulas and of toric calculators.
He resides in Houston, TX with his wife Marcia.
