Maria Filomena Jorge Ribeiro, MD PhD

​

EDUCATION:

Filomena J Ribeiro completed the Integrated Master Degree in Medicine in 1992 at the Faculty of Medicine, the University of Lisbon with the final classification of 17/20 (With Distinction) and her Ophthalmology Residency in 1995 in Hospital S. António dos Capuchos finishing in 2000 with the classification of 19.3/20. She was given the title (by a contest) of Graduated Assistant in 2015. She received her PhD in Biomedical Engineering in 2014 at the University of Lisbon with a classification of Pass With Merit. She became a Fellow of the European Board Of Ophthalmology in 2014 and received the Pan-American Association of Ophthalmology Leadership Course Postgraduate Certificate in 2008. She took the PADIS Top Management program for healthcare institutions at the AESE Business School in 2008.

OPHTHALMOLOGY ACTIVITY:

Ophthalmology Assistant at Hospital da Luz Lisboa since April 2007 and Head of the Ophthalmology Department of Hospital da Luz Lisboa since June 2016. She has received 8 international awards.

ASSOCIATIVE ACTIVITY:

Coordinator of the Portuguese Group of Ocular Inflammation of the Portuguese Society of Ophthalmology from 2004 to 2006. Coordinator of the Portuguese Group of Cataract and Refractive Surgery in 2017-2018. She is on the Board of the Portuguese Ophthalmology College since 2015 and General Secretary of the Portuguese Ophthalmology College in 2009-2012. She was the national representative of the European Union of Medical Specialists (UEMS) from 2016-2019. On the Co-Board of the European Society of Cataract & Refractive Surgeons (ESCRS) from 2016 to 2018. She was elected to the Board of the ESCRS in 2018 and elected Secretary of the ESCRS in 2019.

TEACHING ACTIVITY:

Nacional Ophthalmology Jury examiner from 2015 to 2020.  European Board of Ophthalmology Examiner since 2007.  European Board Cataract and Refractive Surgery Examiner since 2017. Ophthalmology Assistant Professor at Medicine College of Lisbon University since 2008. Biomedical Engineering Regent and Professor at Lisbon University, Instituto Superior Tecnico since 2017. Ophthalmology Professor at the Medicine College in Lisbon Catholic University since 2022. She has been the Tutor of more than 20 Projects, Master and Ph.D. Theses and Director of the Portuguese Annual Simulated Ophthalmologic Surgery Courses: Cataract beginners Course; Complex cataract Course; Vitreo-retina beginners course.

 

RESEARCH ACTIVITY:

She has been dedicated to research in cataract and refractive surgery and biomedical engineering as well as a researcher at the Visual Sciences Research Centre (Medicine College at Lisbon University) and the Learning Health Vision Group (Hospital da Luz Lisboa) and the Nuclear Fusion Lasers and Plasmas Group (Instituto Superior Tecnico, Lisbon University).
